If a fraction of this money was invested by the Government in enabling our voluntary youth work sector to give young people community-based safety nets, they might not hit the slippery slope in the first place. Instead of being a drain on resources, they might contribute to society and the economy as well as leading more fulfilled lives.
The term NEET lumps together young people with very different experiences.
Some have difficulties that are deep-rooted and require costly intensive activity with experienced workers and specialist skills. Many of UK Youth's own core programmes - young mothers, young men and fatherhood and our work with young offenders' institutions and youth offending teams - rightly attend to this vulnerable group.
