POLICY & PRACTICE: Soapbox - Crime would fall if more peoplebothered to report it

2 mins read

Sounds silly, maybe? Imagine if everyone, young and old, reported details of the crimes they witnessed - no-one would dare to commit a crime because they would inevitably be caught. I mean, what have we got to be ashamed about over reporting crime?

The public perception of crime is that most of it is committed by young people. Ask anyone who causes all the trouble in their area and I'll bet a pound to a penny they name a young person. Isn't it about time young people stopped getting a raw deal from the community?

Take violent crime, for example. Statistics show that 16- to 24-year-old males are most likely to be victims of such incidents. We already know from talking to young people that most of them do not commit crime, but for those who are victims of crime, the fear of reprisals may often prevent them from reporting it.
