It is my experience that homophobic bullying is on the increase. The majority of young people who are accessing our project, Gay and Lesbian Youth in Calderdale (www.galyic.org.uk), have experienced it and, despite the various circulars and publications from the Department for Education and Skills on the subject, most schools are still doing nothing about it.
Only this month a young man contacted me because he had been off school for three months as a result of homophobic bullying; the school was aware of the bullying but had done nothing to stop it. He was absolutely terrified of going back to school. He is not out to his parents and believes that once they know he will be thrown out. He is 15 years old.
