Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has ruled that food high in fat, salt andsugar is not to be advertised to under-16s. Most food packaging is nowlabelled showing the amount of fat, salt, sugar and calories in aproduct.

The Healthy Schools initiative encourages children to make healthierfood choices, while families on benefits can use Healthy Start vouchersto get free milk, vegetables and fruit.

Up to 80 per cent of children are offered two hours of physicaleducation a week at school and many have banned junk food.

Other initiatives include the Pedometer Challenge, in which children aregiven pedometers and asked to compare the number of steps they take eachday with classmates.
