ENGLAND

The Government has rejected repeated calls for a national play strategy.Instead, as part of the Big Lottery Fund's programme for children'splay, the Children's Play Council at the National Children's Bureau wasawarded 15m over five years to develop regionalinfrastructures.

The money is managed by Play England, a project set up by the council.In September last year, its regional managers started work to supportlocal authorities develop play strategies. This includes helping themapply for funding.

However, campaigners continue to call for a strategy, pointing out flawsin the current system, including the fact that extended schools don'thave to provide play services.

SCOTLAND

Scotland has neither a national strategy nor a lottery-fundedprogramme.
