The Youth Justice Board is the agency that oversees work to preventyouth crime and to stop children reoffending.

Multi-agency youth justice teams work at a local authority level todivert young people from crime and to stop further offences. The teamsuse a variety of approaches including youth inclusion programmes andsafer schools partnerships.

The courts deal with children who commit crimes, but youth offendingteams advise courts how children should be dealt with. The teams alsomanage offenders on some community sentences such as the intensivesupervision and surveillance programme.

The Youth Justice Board is in charge of placing children in custody.

SCOTLAND

Eight- to 16-year-olds who commit crimes are usually dealt with bychildren's hearings rather than courts.
