There are two types of cases in family law: public, which are casesbrought by the local authority; and private, which are cases broughtbetween parents. Adoption cases can be either a public or a privatecase.

There are three types of courts where cases are heard: a familyproceedings court where cases are initially heard; a county court, wheremore complex cases are referred; and the High Court where serious casesare sent. Cases are presided over by a panel of lay magistrates orjudges.

Support for children in England is offered by the Children and FamilyCourt Advisory and Support Service, which provides young people with afamily guardian and lawyer to help them navigate court proceedings.
