Policy & Practice: Four nations - Careers advice

ENGLAND

In England careers services have become largely subsumed into theConnexions service, which caters for all 13- to 19-year-olds.

Connexions also provides advice on issues such as health, finance,relationships, education and personal development. There are 47Connexions partnerships throughout England. The funding that currentlygoes to each of these partnerships will go directly to each localauthority from April 2008.

Head teachers must work with Connexions to ensure all secondary pupilshave access to careers information and guidance. The Learning and SkillsCouncil also provides information, advice and guidance for adults andfor young people in sixth forms and further education colleges.

SCOTLAND

Following devolution, responsibility for careers services was passed tothe Scottish Executive. The executive launched Careers Scotland in 2002as a one-stop shop to provide careers guidance to everyone inScotland.
