Government policy says all Gypsy and Traveller children should be giventhe same opportunities as other children.
Local education authorities have a legal responsibility to ensure allchildren aged five to 16 in their area have access to education. Fundingfor Gypsy and Traveller children is the same as for other children, andwhen schools face a financial burden in responding to their educationalneeds they can apply for additional funding through the VulnerableChildren Grant.
Funding for Gypsy and Traveller children goes to the Traveller educationservices within the local authority to provide distance learning'specialist education welfare officers, peripatetic teachers (whotravel), resources and staff training.
