The Government launched a revised school admissions code in Februarywith the aim of making the selection system fairer for parents whoalready get a choice of nearby primary and secondary schools.
Taking effect from September 2008, the code applies to all state schoolsand bans certain selection criteria, including selection by parents'financial or marital status.
Other changes include schools having to give priority to looked-afterchildren and a ban on covert selection techniques, such as expensiveschool uniforms. All schools are required to explain their selectioncriteria.
Latest figures for 2005/06, show 56,000 parents appealed against theschool allocated to their child.
