When a child receives a diagnosis of autism it's quite devastating forparents. They want to access all the health services they can to help -speech and language therapy, special play groups and help for sensorydifficulties.
In most cases this works fairly well. But in some situations parentsfeel it's not enough. That's often when they'll try other approaches'such as applied behaviour analysis.
The programme is quite rigid and children can become dependent on adultsprompting them. For many children who are already doing well it canwork.
But because it's taught in a rigid one-to-one way, those with moresevere problems find they can't transfer their behaviour to startingschool.
