If a mother who is in an abusive relationship turns up at school and tells you about a beating she has just received from her partner, what's the best way to help her and her children?

A head teacher reveals her dilemma about how much information she should share and who should be told.

A mother of two children at my school in south London had been on drugs and was now on Methadone. It was sad to see the state she was in.

She had two lovely children but they went through a lot at home.

Her long-term partner was the father of her two children and they used to fight at home. He lived a few miles away and we thought he was with her for a bit of control.

She had gone to a special school but he spoke quite well, and we suspected he was doing things illegally because he had lots of money.
