We were working with a 15-year-old boy in foster care. He had specialneeds and his school had threatened to exclude him because of hisbehaviour and drug taking. We liaised with his foster carer who was veryhelpful and worked with the school quite well. An added advantage wasthat the boy listened to his carer. We also had a meeting with theschool about the number of his temporary exclusions.
However, the situation soon deteriorated when the school decided toexclude the boy permanently because he was caught with drugs, which hedenied.
The school felt he could be offering the drugs to other children.
We took advice from our education officer and had more meetings with theschool to appeal against the permanent exclusion. The local authoritysocial worker also got involved and attended several meetings to talkthrough the situation and discuss what was in the boy's bestinterests.
