I was working with a young child and his mother because of childprotection concerns. She had serious problems and the boy had been onthe child protection register since birth. The child was eventuallytaken into care when he was three because of an incident of seriousphysical abuse in the family home.

I'd done a lot of work with the mother and I was pleased when she toldme that she had realised that she would never be able to care for herchild properly. She agreed to let her son be placed for adoption and mysenior managers agreed that I'd done a really good piece of work. I felta great sense of responsibility to both the mother and child and wantedto ensure the boy was found the right home. The mother had been in careherself and wanted her son to go to a family who loved him.
