But could this, and her closeness to the case, cloud her judgment andobjectivity? A senior duty and assessment practitioner recalls whathappened when a case returned to her list that she had dealt withpreviously.

- A number of years ago I was involved with a family referred to ourdepartment because of poor home conditions. An initial visit foundconditions to be so neglected that the children were removed immediatelyand placed with extended family members. Their mother was arrogant andaggressive, and made a point of telling me she was a professional.

A child protection case conference was convened. Despite myrecommendation, the children's names were not placed on the childprotection register.
