Closing date: 14 June 2007

What's in it?

Young people may be forced to stay in full-time education until they are 18, if plans to change the school leaving age are approved. This green paper outlines benefits for individuals, the economy and society if post-16 education is made compulsory.

Plans include:

Compulsory education for all young people until their 18th birthday, either at school, in college, or in work-based learning with widely recognised qualifications.

What people say about it:

Chris Evans, executive director of the Institute of Career Guidance, welcomes the plans: "The Institute of Career Guidance recognises the need to equip young people with the skills needed for employment in a dynamic 21st-century labour market."
