What's in it?
Head teachers in England will soon have a power to search pupils without consent if they suspect they are carrying a knife or other weapon. This draft guidance gives advice on screening pupils for weapons without suspicion, as well as procedures to follow when searching pupils without consent.
Plans include:
Screening of randomly selected pupils while on the premises using a metal detector. Training for head teachers or staff.
What people say about it:
"It's up to schools to decide whether they install metal detectors," a National Union of Teachers spokeswoman says. "We welcome the fact that the right to discipline pupils has been enshrined in law and it will send out the message that schools are safe and secure places of learning."
