This draft guidance advises schools on searching pupils without consentwhen there is a reasonable belief the child has a weapon and screeningpupils for weapons using metal detectors.
It advises against screening all pupils as they enter school and insteadsupports random checks on children. Schools should also publicise ruleson screening to parents and children.
Screening, it adds, should be a last resort and head teachers can onlyask security staff to conduct searches. A second person should bepresent when pupils are searched. Searchers can check pockets andrequire pupils to remove outer clothing but they may not carry outintimate searches.
