To prevent rising numbers of pupils carrying weapons in school, the Government has given new powers to screen and search students.

Is knife-carrying endemic among young people? Surveys differ, but asignificant minority of young people, especially boys, admit to carryinga knife.

How should we respond? At a guess: swagger. It's the thing to do, givesone power to intimidate others, and helps children to feel safe.However, as part of the move to give education staff greater authoritywhen dealing with behaviour and discipline issues, new powers areavailable to them from 31 May. Sections 45 and 46 of the Violent CrimeReduction Act 2006 amend current legislation to give professionals inEngland the power to screen school pupils or further education studentsfor weapons, and/or search them without asking for consent.
