Consultation of the week: New charging regulations for musictuition

Under the Education Act 1996 regulations, charging pupils at state schools for education is prohibited, but now the Government is seeking to allow charges to be made for music lessons in specific circumstances.

The Government says by making these changes children will be given agreater choice about which music lessons they can take.

The regulations state that music tuition that would be taught as part ofthe National Curriculum or the Key Stage 2 Instrumental and VocalTuition Programme cannot be charged for. Children already taking lessonswill not be charged when the regulations come into effect in September2007.

In addition, looked-after children and those on free school meals willbe exempt from charges.
