Participation: Lewisham gets UK's first young mayor

1 min read

Emanuel Hawks has a young people's budget of 25,000 at his disposal, although adult councillors can veto his ideas.

"I promise to make sure the young people in the borough really feel they have a strong voice in the community," said Hawks, who stood on a platform of music, drama and sport workshops, cafe meeting places to get young people off the streets and schools-based environmental awareness.

Lewisham mayor Steve Bullock said he wanted "to make sure the voice of young people is heard", but because of child protection issues the council is monitoring all requests for interviews.

Hawks secured his one-year term after polling 1,017 votes. Around 8,000 young people took part in the election.
