Seventeen-year-old Uma Akhter fought off competition from 23 other candidates in an election, which saw a record 46 per cent of young people turning out to vote.
The teenager from Bow will now take the reins from former young mayor Akram Hussain.
Uma said: "I want to raise awareness so that young people in Tower Hamlets know there is a young mayor who is waiting to hear their views."
Getting young people into employment and training will be one of Uma's key priorities
As the third young mayor for the borough, Uma will be joined by deputy young mayors Jahingir Alom, Alex Kuye and Jamil Ahmad. She will chair young people's forum Tower Hamlets Youth Partnership and will represent the borough on the UK Youth Parliament London region.
Uma will also head up the borough's Youth Opportunity Fund Grants Panels, which assesses funding applications and distributes around £600,000 funding to young people in Tower Hamlets.
