Scheme to help young carers in Tower Hamlets

1 min read Health Social Care
Tower Hamlets council has launched a scheme to help young people caring for family or friends.

Cabinet members approved the Young Carers Strategy earlier this month, which will aim to support under-18s who care for a friend or relative without pay over the next three years.

The strategy includes plans to raise awareness of the help available to young carers and will give guidance and training to school and youth group staff to make them aware of the challenges facing young carers.

The council is also introducing Choices and Opportunities On-Line cards, which will allow young people to take part in leisure and cultural activities for free.

Clair Hawkins, lead member for children's service at Tower Hamlets, said: "Young carers do a fantastic job, but we want to make sure they can continue to live healthy, happy lives and perform well during their time at school or college.

"This strategy will make that possible. It will help to significantly take the pressure off young carers and ensure they have access to all the support they need and are entitled to."

It is estimated that there are around 1,200 young people in Tower Hamlets caring for people up to and more than 20 hours per week, but only 150 are currently receiving support from the council.
