Participation: Lewisham appoints new youth mayor

Wilf won 48 per cent of the vote, beating 32 other candidates. His manifesto included creating more venues for local bands, a space for young people to run "gigs or raves", promoting exercise and getting funding for school equipment.

Steve Bullock, mayor of Lewisham, said: "The enthusiasm was extraordinary and turnout was higher than for the local election."

Wilf, who will replace the first young mayor of Lewisham, Emanuel Hawks, will handle a budget of 25,000 and will appoint a cabinet.

"It will be tough for Wilf to follow Emanuel as he managed to get funding to boost the budget to 37,500," said Bullock.
