Ken Robinson, a Northern Ireland Assembly member, called on the Northern Ireland education minister, Barry Gardiner, to implement the Anti-Bullying Alliance in the region.
"As a former head teacher, I know bullying is a big issue," he said.
"I also know that younger children will go to older children as mentors first if they are bullied, and paramilitaries are an added issue if someone knows someone who can get involved."
Robinson plans to lobby Gardiner to extend the scheme and David Burnside, an Ulster Unionist MP, intends to raise the issue in Parliament.
The England-wide initiative was launched recently by the Department for Education and Skills (YPN, 21-27 July, p6).
