Education: School row ensues in Northern Ireland

Education
A row about school closures and Irish language schools has broken out in Northern Ireland.

In a Northern Ireland Assembly debate last week, Democratic Unionist members attacked education minister Caitriona Ruane and accused her of protecting Catholic and Irish language schools from a wider programme of school mergers and closures.

The row follows a decision in August by Ruane, a Sinn Fein member, to support the opening of three Irish medium schools, each catering for less than 20 children.

Democratic Unionist Michelle McIleveen, a member of the assembly's education committee, said Ruane's decision was a "blatant sectarian approach".
