Northern Ireland: Parties join to call for poverty action

Northern Ireland's main political parties made a rare show of solidarity this week to give their backing to a call for improvements in child poverty policy.

Members of unionist and republican parties shared a platform to showsupport for the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action's EnoughIs Enough campaign to reduce poverty.

Nelson McCausland, a Democratic Unionist Party MLA, said: "Poverty isnot limited to unionist or nationalist communities. It needs to be movedup the Government's priority list."

The five parties called on Northern Ireland's recently appointedchildren's minister Lord Rooker to strengthen a proposed anti-povertystrategy.
