The furthest I'd travelled before was Spain, so I didn't know what to expect when I got to South Africa. I'd heard a lot about the country and seen pictures on the news of poor kids living in shacks. But the care they got at the Othandweni centre was excellent and the children were happy and hopeful.
The trip made me realise just how fortunate I am. Some of the children had HIV and I really bonded with an 11-month-old girl who was diagnosed with the disease while I was there.
It made me wonder how young people in Britain would cope with problems like this. Going to South Africa also made me think about what I really wanted to do when I got back home. I now want to work with vulnerable families and maybe become a social worker.
