"Life Routes is truly driven by the young people who are the clients of the programme. It contributes to every setting they choose to go on to - be it college, employment or parenting - as well as giving them transferable skills. "As a national beacon for young people's engagement, we found that Life Routes fits in perfectly with our local strategy. It contributes to our community cohesion work by promoting positive interactions across different generations, faiths and ethnicities. It also gives young people the opportunity to engage with adults in a positive way."
Gaynor Clarke, regional co-ordinator for Life Routes in the North East, talks about Gateshead's role as the hub of the programme: "Gateshead is the lead authority for Life Routes in the area. This is significant in terms of developing the programme across the region and using the experience and knowledge we have built up to help other authorities develop it. Being the hub gives the programme sustainability by rooting it in the authority's youth plan and making it an intrinsic part of our philosophy, which is a very positive thing."
