NCB Now: Schools partner to reduce exclusions

1 min read
NCB's pupil inclusion unit has secured funding from the Bridge House Trust to undertake a project to encourage a whole-school approach to reducing pupil exclusions.

The project aims to ensure that schools are better prepared to meet the needs of young people who are experiencing difficulty managing their behaviour.

Over a two-year period, the unit will work with two London-based schools to recruit and train pupils, both model students and those at risk of exclusion, in effective and practical mediation and conflict resolution skills.

The neighbouring schools will work in partnership to develop a peer mediation scheme. NCB will use the results of this project to identify a model of good practice to be disseminated to NCB members.

"Evidence suggests that targeted early intervention work which involves young people is integral to their ability to manage their own behaviour and we believe that peer mediation can have a direct influence on reducing exclusions," said Derek Willis, principal officer, pupil inclusion unit.
