The service was piloted by NCB in a secondary school that was in special measures at the time, but is now making good progress and passed its latest Ofsted inspection. Students of all ages - including some experiencing behavioural problems or poor attendance - were consulted on what the school did well, and where improvements could be made.
Staff also had the opportunity to express their views, which in many cases coincided with the students' opinions. The priorities identified by both staff and students were then incorporated into the School Development Plan for further action.
The students welcomed the opportunity to have their say. "It is excellent that the school wants to know our views for real," said one, while another recognised the value of involving an outside agency: "We were more honest as you are not from the school."
