In 2002, NCB created four places on its board for members of Young NCB,with the intention that the young people would participate fully in theboard's work.
The report, compiled by NCB's research department, evaluates thisinitiative, considering the process and impact of involving young peoplein the charity's governance.
The report found that one of the initial challenges faced inimplementing the initiative was ensuring the board's business was madeaccessible to young members without any element of "dumbing down". Toovercome this a mentoring system that pairs each young person with anadult was introduced.
When asked about the impact of the initiative, the young people involvedreported that they had gained confidence. "When I wasn't on the board Idon't think I'd have been able to speak to a room of adults so freely,"said one young board member.
