Dame Gillian has had a long and close association with NCB, having spentnearly 20 years working for the charity. Her achievements during thistime included establishing the Early Childhood Unit and becoming chiefexecutive of Coram Family. Over the past 30 years Gillian has advisedgovernments in the UK and overseas on the development of policy forchildren and families and has published widely.
NCB's annual general meeting also saw former chair Anne Sofer stand downafter six years. Sofer is a former director of education in TowerHamlets.
She was a founding member of the Channel Four television company and theKennedy Committee on widening participation in further education, and isa trustee for a number of charities.
"Gillian's energy and commitment to children and young people, alongwith her extensive knowledge of NCB and its work, will make her anexcellent chair," said NCB chief executive Paul Ennals.
"I believe that she will be a gifted successor to Anne Sofer, who hasprovided calm and expert guidance to NCB over the past six years." -www.ncb.org.uk.
