The recent Fitting it All Together: How Families Arrange their Childcare and the Influence on Children's Home Learning report by NatCen shows that, while some research has raised concerns about the potentially negative effects of non-parental childcare on very young children, most children aged under one either do not receive non-parental childcare or receive only small amounts of grandparental care.

The research looks at the different types of childcare and early education that older pre-school children and school-aged children receive, how this is combined with other types of childcare, the reasons why they attend childcare (for example, so that their parents can work or socialise, or for their child's education or enjoyment) and the length of time they spend there. Finally, it explores the influence of childcare use on children's learning activities at home.
