NCB Now: London celebration for youth board

An event on Saturday 9 September showed the success of involving children and young people in the development of policy at government level.

The Children and Youth Board, co-ordinated by NCB and the British YouthCouncil, is made up of 25 young people between eight and 18 from acrossthe UK. Funded by the Department for Education and Skills, the boardaims to advise the Government on issues affecting children and youngpeople.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes thanked the children and youngpeople for their commitment and hard work. She said: "The board made aninvaluable contribution to our policy making, playing an important rolein the Youth Matters consultation and response, and expressing views onissues such as citizenship."

Lucy Read from NCB's participation unit, who co-ordinated the board,commented: "This initiative demonstrates the fact that, when youngpeople are given the opportunity and the support to speak out, they canplay an important role within wider decision-making."
