Balls, Children's Minister Beverley Hughes and directors from the DCSF were there to mark the end of the Board members' first year in office and the start of their second year advising the department.
Balls said: "Our Children and Youth Board gives children and young people a voice and ensures that politicians like me are aware of the impact that our decisions can have and helps us get it right."
Board members presented on a range of topics, from healthy lifestyles to widening access to extended school activities. Their involvement in developing The Children's Plan and their contribution to the draft national Play Strategy were also recognised. Later, a series of informal sessions with ministers and officials covered topics such as young people in the media, youth crime and school food and buildings.
