NCB Now: Comment - Being healthy is about leading a balanced life

1 min read
At the end of June, I attended a meeting in London, along with 24 other children and young people from the Department for Children, Schools and Families' (DCSF) new Children and Youth Board to discuss "healthy lifestyles" - what it means to us, and what the government and schools can do to help us live them.

First, we focused on the idea that a healthy lifestyle isn't just about eating things that are good for you and doing exercise. It is more about having a balanced lifestyle - one where you can still eat things you enjoy and do activities you like.

Mixed messages being given out about being too fat or too thin are confusing many young people and, as one board member pointed out, "being a size zero is not healthy and this needs to be made clear to young people". We also felt that mental health should be a key factor to a healthy lifestyle.
