NCB Now: Healthy Care to release e-briefing

A new e-briefing from the Healthy Care programme will focus on support and training for foster carers to improve the health and wellbeing of looked-after children.

Many looked-after children and young people have poor physical andmental health when they come into care and need extra help and support.Children and young people responding to NCB's Care Matters consultationidentified foster carers as the most important people with regard totheir health and wellbeing. It is therefore essential that foster carersget the necessary support and training to increase children and youngpeople's chances of a happy and healthy childhood, and a good start foradult life.

The e-briefing identifies the importance of trained and supported fostercarers, provides examples of how Healthy Care partnerships can givesupport and recommends resources.

Healthy Care is funded by the Department for Education and Skills anddeveloped by NCB. It is a practical means of improving the health andwellbeing of looked-after children and young people in line withDepartment of Health guidance Promoting the Health of Looked AfterChildren (2002), Every Child Matters and the Change for Childrenprogramme.
