VLP recruits 16- to 18-year-olds to develop and deliver a project about an issue they wish to change in their local area. The leaders recruit peers to support them to deliver their project and are provided with training and ongoing mentoring, and work towards an Asdan-accredited award.
The afternoon saw young leaders give presentations on their participation, including Jamie who has run a project that teaches cycle maintenance skills to young people. Jamie's project sources bikes in varying states of repair from the police and teaches maintenance skills, and then plans cycling outings. Jamie has found funding sources to make it a sustainable project, which he feels has made the project better than he could have dreamed of.
