NCB Now: Disabled children launch manifesto for change

1 min read
The Disabled Children's Manifesto for Change was produced by disabled children and young people in partnership with Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) and the Council for Disabled Children (CDC), based at NCB. The manifesto challenges political parties to set out their policies on increasing respect, inclusion and participation for disabled children.

EDCM and CDC collaborated with several focus groups of disabled young people across the country to gain an understanding about the issues they want the political parties to prioritise. To ensure the report reflected their experiences, the statement "I would vote for your party if ... " was posed and the responses informed the key messages disabled young people want the next government to commit to.

Four young people from the CDC steering group were involved in developing the report's content further. A film was then developed to accompany it with the steering group members and disabled young people from The Children's Society Pact group in Yorkshire and Mencap Me2 in Dudley. The film features disabled young people talking about the report and their experiences of equality, independent living, access to services, and education and training, and sends a clear message for MPs to invest in accessible and inclusive participation structures for disabled young people.
