NCB Now: Centre of excellence publishes its first report onresidential child care

The National Centre for Excellence in Residential Child Care, based at NCB, has published its first report: What Works in Residential Child Care: A Review of the Research and Implications for Practice.

Written by leading researchers Roger Clough, Roger Bullock and AdrianWard, the publication reviews research evidence identifying thesignificant elements that will put in place a successful strategy forresidential child care.

The report shows that effective residential child care can be achievedwith good knowledge, appropriate processes and best practice. Itemphasises the importance of correctly assessing the needs of youngpeople and matching these to placements. Importantly, the reportdescribes what helps residential child care to be successful, focusingnot only on the processes within settings but what needs to be providedexternally to support success, such as training.

Jonathan Stanley, principal officer of the National Centre forExcellence in Residential Child Care, said: "The publication shows thecommitment of the centre to create common reference points forproviders, regulators, commissioners, policy makers and youngpeople.
