For Jonathan Stanley, manager of the National Centre for Excellence in Residential Child Care (NCERCC), there is never a quiet moment.

The centre is at the heart of research into what works in residential child care and the concerns of practitioners about the sector. "Whether we're working with practitioners in children's homes or with the government, we're always working on how we can improve things," says Stanley, who has been at the centre since it was established just over two years ago.

During its short lifetime, the centre has carried out research into the effect of market forces on the sector, after concerns were raised about the rising cost of placements. "People said cost was a factor and that they saw occupancy rates going down and we found the evidence," he says.
