NCB Now: Advice on listening to young children

1 min read
The Sure Start Unit at the Department for Education and Skills has commissioned NCB's early childhood unit to produce a series of guides on listening to children from 0-8 years of age.

The move follows a recommendation from two networks co-ordinated by NCB - the Early Childhood Forum and the Local Authority Early Years Co-ordinators' Network - that more resources are needed to help practitioners think through the issue of consultation with this age group.

The five-part series of booklets, entitled Listening as a Way of Life, will gather information on methods of communicating with young children about the services they use. Each guide will contain detailed examples of good practice and messages from research, as well as references for further information.

Sue Owen, director of the early childhood unit, said: "Consultation with young people is becoming a fact of modern life - but all too often there is an assumption that the smallest children aren't in a position to communicate their views. In fact, as these guides will demonstrate, the notion that it's harder to consult in the early years is the opposite of the truth."
