NCB Now: Listen to children's individual needs

1 min read
Individuality of the child was the theme of the ninth Early Years Conference, held in Nottingham on 8 and 9 July. Hosted by NCB's Early Childhood Unit, NES Arnold and the Council for Awards in Children's Care (CACHE) this conference has become a landmark event for the early years sector.

The 'Individual children - group goals' conference looked at how to identify and respond to the needs of each child within the targets the Government is setting for society as a whole.

Minister for Children Margaret Hodge spoke to delegates about the ways in which the Government is promoting these targets in its work with young children and their families.

A key message arising from the conference was the need to listen effectively to young children. Diane Rich, from Rich Learning Opportunities, hosted a workshop aimed at helping practitioners achieve this, while Mary-Jane Drummond, former lecturer at the Faculty of Education, Cambridge University reinforced the importance of tuning into children's needs in order to support their learning.
