My Life: Leon Cheung, 20, London

The thought of applying to The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) came about when I was filling out my school personal statement. I realised that my extra curriculum page was completely blank. Luckily it was not too late to join the DofE.

I carried out in-depth personal research about the organisation and what the structural levels are. As I was researching more, my motivation and determination grew. In order to accomplish the best and compete with myself to find out how much I could achieve, I went directly for the DofE Gold Award, which requires extra months to be completed. Wasting no time, I went to the closest organisation that runs DofE which was The Vibe Youth Centre in Dagenham.

During the summer of the same year, I participated in The Challenge from the National Citizen Service. I seized this opportunity to complete my residential section for DofE as I was staying away from home.

Throughout these experiences, it has taught me the importance of communication skills and leadership; I was responsible for my team members and taking them safely through a route to a set destination.

My time management skills have improved from the daily continuous juggling of work, social life, studying and reaching the completion of DofE Gold.

I want to take this opportunity to say a massive “thank you” for the support of my family and leaders at The Vibe, as I acknowledge the importance of appreciating every moment in life and gaining outstanding accomplishments.
