My Life: Cameron Smyth, 20, Reading

1 min read Youth Work Participation
I first became involved with Berkshire Youth when I was a member of the Youth Parliament. Berkshire Youth was able to help me with a campaign to attract more young people into volunteering around Berkshire. The programme was successful and I saw various young people at clubs volunteering as a result. It is a joy to see them having fun, and afterwards I was offered a place on a course to develop my leadership skills.

After the course, I was given the chance to become a young leader, helping to deliver the same course that I had studied. Becoming a young leader allowed me to use the skills I learned on the leadership course and gave me a greater understanding of what Berkshire Youth does.

At the end of my first year of university, I was offered work at Berkshire Youth as an assistant leader delivering the National Citizen Service (NCS), working with a group based in West Berkshire. This year, I have become a team leader on the NCS course and I'm delivering sports, leisure and activities team sessions for young people in rural areas.
