Both have been highly successful, with a diverse range of attendees from all ethnic backgrounds and ages. At the older club we’ve shown a wide variety of films, from German epic Fitzcarraldo to the cowboy classic The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. No matter how unusual or demanding the films, members have tackled them with maturity, enjoying each and every one.
I’ve also arranged special events for our club – for example, a horror week and a Super 8 day, featuring a selection of Super 8mm films including those by Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and Errol Flynn. One of our members composed original piano music to accompany the films, and we wore fake moustaches and ate tons of popcorn.
This year, I received an award for Filmclub member of the year. I think it was because of the leftfield selection of films I’ve shown at my club and its special events. The awards ceremony was amazing, as I was able to meet and be inspired by other young filmmakers. Being nominated and going on to win the award was a really exciting and interesting experience – it’s great to feel our club is good enough to be recognised nationally.
