The Big Deal Competition, run by education charity Brightside and The Excellence Hub for Yorkshire and Humber, is a 10-week programme in which we had to create a business team, come up with a new product, write a business plan and, to finish it off, pitch it all to nine intimidating businessmen and women.

The competition was one of the most exciting and challenging things I have ever participated in. It was tough and even stressful at times, but really helped me and my business team develop skills we didn't know we had.

Throughout the programme there were a number of things we found difficult but managed to work through, for example when asked to draw up a full budget for our product we were, at first, completely stumped. It was unlike anything we had attempted before and we had no idea how to start but after a bit of research and a lot of hard work we found we had done it and it proved to be even more rewarding when we had done so. I think if the Big Deal taught us one thing it was how to persevere with something that turns out to be much harder than we first thought.
