My Life: Ryan McAlister, 15, Congleton

I was looking for a volunteering opportunity to achieve my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award when I became involved with Friends for Leisure (FFL), a local charity that gives disabled young people the chance to socialise, make friends and have fun with others in their community.

My role as a volunteer is to go to the FFL youth group and get to know the young people who attend, and to socialise with them as I would my own friends.

I felt anxious the first time I went as I had not met any of the young people before, nor had I met any of the other volunteers. The staff paired me up with a young person that evening and I got to know his likes and dislikes and found that we both had a lot of common interests.

As the weeks have passed, I have got to know more of the young people and what they enjoy, and feel so much more comfortable in my role, growing in confidence all the time.
