I was very lucky to be among 30 young people chosen to take part in a history course at Oxford University, organised by the Sutton Trust, to allow students to experience life at the university.

It was very fascinating, as I got to study periods of my favourite subject for the first time, such as Irish independence, and this increased my enthusiasm for it. I never knew how significant the Easter Rising was.

We went to watch a contemporary, open-air performance of Hamlet, which I have never studied. Although it was confusing and windy, it was very entertaining, especially the ending when all the characters died.

I learned fencing at the sports grounds and I managed to win two out of three duels, not bad for a beginner. Then I was put through my paces in kickboxing. Even though my nose was punched accidentally, I managed to throw my fists in the right direction, and kick the target too.
